Sahara blues with an abundance of guitars and hypnotic solos
Etran de L’Aïr (the stars of Aïr) welcomes you to the sound of Agadez, the capital of Saharan blues, they say. The band from Niger consists of brothers and cousins and has been playing together for more than 25 years. Characterized by hypnotic solos and an abundance of guitars, Etran de L’Aïr is part of the same scene as Tinariwen, Mdou Moctar and Bombino. Last year they released their best received album so far under the name ‘Agadez’. They have previously performed in the Netherlands at Valkhof festival and Le Guess Who?, and this summer they will make their first appearance at EKKO.
Support: Amara Diabate
Virtuoso drummer and kora player Amara Diabate tells the history of his home region in West African Guinea through his music. Inspired by individuals such as his grandfather and mother, he began his musical career when he was 12 years old and learned to play the djembé and later on instruments such as doundoun, kenkeni, gongoma, sangban and the kora, a 21-stringed lute. Since 1994, Amara has lived in the Netherlands and has since been giving music workshops and accompanying African dance classes. He often performs with his group Super Landaya, but for this occasion he is playing solo in EKKO.
