LAUGHING FACES AND MOVING BODIES BY SEVEN-PIECE AFROFUNKBAND
Since their formation in 2013, the seven-member ensemble KOFFIE from Amsterdam has been a guarantee for smiling faces and moving bodies. The foundation of this modern groove machine, infused with jazz, funk, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, was laid at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where guitarist Valentijn Bannier and drummer Abe van der Woude met and decided to unite their love for Fela Kuti and Tony Allen in KOFFIE. The natural chemistry and energy on stage led to the self-titled debut album, featuring vocals by Nassan Silva Lopes. It became a layered record full of atmospheric Afro-funk with a crackling, irresistible groove that even convinced Benny Sings to contribute as a guest. With Covid behind them and a few years older and wiser, KOFFIE returns with their fourth album, ‘kokon.’ On ‘kokon,’ the band celebrates the past decade, delivering their modern blend of soulful Afro-funk, hip-hop, energetic percussion, and crafted pop melodies.
